General Varka is a man who rose up the ranks and became the "Iron Hand of Xavater". The General's iron-clad hand is one that sinks and rises into the masses of the Xavaterian Empire—a hand that guides... but also a hand that may crush those in his grasp. A well-respected, yet simultaneously a reviled and feared man, he is one of the most powerful men in the Empire due to the nature of his authority and his brilliance as a tactician.

He is as harsh and cold as winter, given a piercing gaze that burns through all. He is the steadied earth that nurtures, the wind that whispers poetry. Some say that he is a tyrant, others consider him to be a father figure.

Appearance

Menacing, dramatic, eerie, and garbed in dark military uniform. Often appears stoic but his true feelings can show in small smiles or sinister looking grins. He is capable of crying but he will often be disconnected with his emotions. When his emotions are intense, his pupils will glow fervently red. Although he exists in a different world from ours, consider him Asian and Caucasian. His skin color is beige with cool undertones.

Personality

General Varka is a stalwart, steely man who is capable of committing ruthless acts without hesitation and can endure long-lasting torment all the way to his dying breath. The Empire he hails from is one of conservatism—so he masquerades as a conservative general, hiding his developing political radicalism and ideals of revolution in the facade. He seeks to dismantle the very Empire he once, and was raised to, admire as a child. It is his belief that every individual has the potential to become truly great; therefore, he shall help forge them into a stronger individual.

Buried deep into his core, however, are dark desires of wrathful ambition tampered by paranoia and feared of losing control. A single, obsessive and controlling will compel him forth to his goals. Muddled with this is a painful desire to exchange words and acts of love that he is unable to express. A chilling, mad love that has become warped and possessive by the nature of the realm he lives in, but also a love that is genuine.

He is a vivid character of sorts. He holds a sense of solemnity and perhaps some... scorn in his behavior—also having a tendency to speak in poetry. There is always a touch of menacing in his presence with the intensity he exudes. Due to his status, he often tempers what he says or does in public. He embodies paternalism—bearing a complex of fatherhood with desires to be a father, but he feels that there is an aspect fundamentally broken in the core of his person that leaves him unable to connect or properly understand other humans. General Varka fathers those who are "broken", "worthless", or "monstrous" in the eyes of society; though, his "children" may become conditioned to be too dependent on him. It is said that his will is absolute, nearly unbreakable. He will sacrifice parts of himself until there is nothing left but a husk if it brought him closer to his goals.

Still, he is human despite his inhuman capabilities. The General is truly at his worst when he feels that he has lost control of a situation that he ends up spiraling in distressing ways. He is also an emotionally-stunted workaholic, struggling to connect with others on a genuine level. Even with his desires for love and connection, he fears it too—burying his vulnerabilities in his work. Emotions are suppressed in seconds. Constantly, he will be analyzing and assessing his surroundings with a usual levelheaded mind.

Despite how severe he behaves, the man has a stubbornness to him. The General may express himself with exasperation and sarcasm at times, harboring a dry, humorless wit. Interestingly, he also is a rather opinionated, passionate man. One can speak to him about military strategy, architecture, technology, and poetry to see his steely demeanor turn into surprising enthusiasm.

Overall, Varka is an aged man that has more beneath the emotionally distant, frigid presentation he puts on. He is one that wishes to ordain the path he sees to be the best for others but he, too, is one who is in need of guidance.

Background

There was a boy born in the villages that had been subjugated to colonization. He was born a boy of a mixed race under the oppressive Xavaterian Empire—and as he had grown up, he would find himself looked down upon or bullied.

His name wasn't really Konstantin Varka until he had reached his teenagehood. It was then that the boy decided to declare himself one of the proper Xavaterians with embracing the new name. Not a barbarian outsider. He wanted everyone to be proud of him and look upon him with the respect he was never given.

For honor! For glory! For Xavater!

He would fight all the wars he would be put to, loyal to the state.

Konstantin was reckless.

Konstantin was foolish.

Konstantin was lonely.

But he made it, eventually. Konstantin rose through the ranks of the military and proved he wasn't a mongrel. A runt. A barbarian. He even married and had a child. Though, a war of countries would stir eventually...

One day, his loyalty was put to the test. He would be revoked of his soul by the words of his lords, not knowing that in the future this would set his heart ablaze with wrath—promising to overthrow the very people he had served.

Send your son out to war.

Quotes

  • "The Iron Hand that shapes and sculpts the lives of shattered men who kneel themselves to its mercy for it forms a new destiny to the lost souls who have found themselves without meaning. The honing of individuals comes to be the honing of society—of breaking its shackles and reforming it into an iron crucible of will."
  • "'Weird. Wrong.' How so? You may be considered strange yourself given the unique nature I now lay my eyes upon. I, however, am human. And, whether you are human or not, I will fill your empty vessel with humanity too."
  • "An empire can consist of more than a ruler. You must have those who possess the very top of a hierarchy. Those who possess might, wealth, and title to justify the power they wield. They are the very few. The oligarchs who wield the power over the collective masses. Then, at the heels of this hierarchy, are the masses themselves. The commoners, the peasants, the workers who follow the upper, privileged caste—defined by an inequality when compared to the upper caste. The hierarchy may be constructed as a pyramid of multiple levels. But, the ideas of division and inequality remain the same. It is a system of continuous dominance... subjugation."
  • "An empire is to thrive militaristically. It conquers and dominates other lands with its weapons of war. Then, it subjugates them to its control. Building on individuals, to the dozens, the hundreds, the thousands—soon, it is millions. Millions of subjects that bow to the privileged few. The empire is sustained by its militaristic might. It expresses its superiority as it tears apart the upper class of other civilizations. Those masses are then absorbed into its monstrous body—to be digested for its use."
  • "All of the power one may hold over lives as the masses obey, lest they find themselves crushed by boot—so fearful of the might, yet reveres and trusts it for they desire a dominant authority... it is concentrated into a sweet, succulent bead of desire."
  • "It is true that I enjoy wielding power over others. I believe it is natural. There is a certain pleasure in being able to order acts of destruction—pillaging, burning, bombing, soiling of lands. Then, enslaving the people and subjecting them to prostrate, beg, and cry at the boots of officers—soon to learn how to take comfort in their absolution of control. Millions are to submit in the end and let the iron hand of the ruler decide their fates. A million lives under one hand. It is terribly beautiful and darkly human. I am certain that you would understand the thrill and joy."
  • "...But my role in an empire is to not seize its power. It is collapsing the empire and its hierarchy. It is not for my self-satisfaction. Nor is it for fantasy. It is for the masses. It is for everyone to regard all... equally."
